Kings Park celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 with the opening of the new eco-friendly Kings Park Education Centre.

The $3 million solar-powered building is the Southern Hemisphere’s first interactive, underground, environmental learning space.

The environmentally friendly building is designed with several sustainability features and is located off Fraser Avenue, embedded into the ground and surrounded by a new native garden. An earth covered roof will help to camouflage the building and act as a thermal insulator to keep the interior cool during the summer and warm in winter.

The centre completes Kings Park’s Education Zone, together with unique outdoor classrooms and a large community shelter in Rio Tinto Naturescape Kings Park, launched in October 2011.

Kings Park Education offers three core learning strands – Habitats and Ecosystems, Plants for Life and People and Place. A suite of over 30 curriculum linked, tailored programs have been designed for students K – 12. Tertiary and adult education programs are also offered, especially during the annual Kings Park Festival.
