Kings Park and Botanic Garden has been awarded an inaugural Green Flag Award for 2012/13.
The Green Flag Award is recognised internationally for the highest standard for parks and green spaces. The scheme has been recently introduced to Australia, and recognises well-managed, high quality green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways.
Kings Park and Botanic Garden was commended for its leading practices; in particular it’s outstanding volunteer program and the recently developed green waste management program. Other criteria included a high standard of safety, welcoming facilities, excellent management of the environment and historical features and sustainability practices, as well as being great places to play and relax.
Other award-winners included Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne and Centennial Parklands in Sydney. Twelve Australasian parks have received the international Green Flag Award for 2013.
Janet Holmes a Court, Patron of Parks Forum, is delighted that one of her own local parks, Kings Park and Botanic Garden has gained the Green Flag Award.
'As Patron of Parks Forum I am proud of the high standards of many of our parks and encourage you all to get outdoors and enjoy the many experiences on offer, either in your local park or as a visitor to our unique national parks or beautiful botanic gardens in Australia and New Zealand.'
