The Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority supports Earth Hour and will switch off selected lighting between 8.30 pm - 9.30 pm, Saturday 23 March 2013.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and is now a worldwide movement involving millions of community and public spaces in over 88 countries. Organisations and individuals are encouraged to turn off non-essential lighting for one hour a year to raise awareness of environmental issues.
The Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority is proud to participate as a leading conservation organisation.
In Kings Park and Botanic Garden, the uplights for the Fraser Avenue trees will be turned off. With the approval of the RSL, the lights in the State War Memorial precinct will also be turned off during Earth Hour 2013. All other standard night lighting will remain unaffected for pedestrian and vehicle safety.
