Welcome to the eighth edition of the 2009 Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority newsletter.

The annual City to Surf will be held on Sunday 30 August 2009, including a half marathon and full marathon through Kings Park and Botanic Garden. There will be several road closures from 6.00am to 12.30pm on this day, including Fraser Avenue, Forrest Drive, Lovekin Drive and Kings Park Road. Access to Kings Park and Botanic Garden will remain open via Saw Avenue, Poole Avenue and May Drive, with accessibility to Bold Park also altered during these times. Read more…

Trees will give joy for many years by enhancing the landscape and providing shelter for people, birds, animals and insects. Now is the time to plant trees in your home garden but there are many important factors to consider when selecting an appropriate tree. Consider the location of the tree, so it can grow without becoming hazardous to buildings and always check the health of roots before purchasing. Native varieties suited to the local area are also strongly recommended. There is something for everyone to enjoy from art classes, science seminars and waterwise gardening presentations to scenic bird walks, wildflowers and free guided walks in both Bold Park and Kings Park and Botanic Garden. Wild Fairyland Festival

thumb_Fairies_grant_wishes_at_the_Wild_Fairyland_FestivalThe Fairy Queen and Gompho Wizardwort invite all of Perth’s little fairies, wizards, goblins, elves and witches to the biggest Fairyland Party of the year. The Wild Fairyland Festival will be held on Sunday 20 September 2009 at the Lotterywest Family Area in Kings Park.  Don’t miss free story telling, sing a longs, may pole dancing, circus magic, unicorns and a whole lot more. To kick off this event, young families are encouraged to join in the fun of the ‘Great Pram Stroll’ to Fairyland with Merlin and Marvin, the madcap stilt walking magicians, so prepare your wands and wings for a ‘fairy-tastic’ time! Free Family Fun on the September Long Weekend

thumb_Katandra_Preserves_with_peopleDon’t miss the grand finale to this year’s Kings Park Festival from Friday 25 to Monday 28 of September, which is packed with free community activities. Be sure to visit the Wildflower Marketplace and browse through various wildflower inspired art, craft and gardening stalls, talk to regional tourism groups and purchase native plants from the Friends of Kings Park plant sale. Relax in the Botanic Garden with friends and family and enjoy the free live entertainment from local musicians, concluding with the fabulous Everlasting Jazz Picnic. The Wildflower Wonderland Theatre Shows are a 'must see' this weekend, so join the mad-cap mystery and mayhem in the Botanic Garden this Spring. Read more…

Friends of Kings Park Festival Address

Join Professor Jim Harris for an informative discussion on the Ecological Restoration of our Planet and learn how the degraded ecosystems can be renewed through active human intervention. The seminar will be held at the Alexander Library in Northbridge on Friday 21 August as a part of the 2009 Kings Park Festival. Tickets are $10 for Friends members and $15 for non members. Roadwork changes to Fraser Avenue Precinct

thumb_fraser_ave_works_updatedWith the Kings Park Festival in full swing this September, it is set to be a very busy month in Kings Park and Botanic Garden. Visitors are to be advised that reconfiguration of vehicle access around the Fraser Avenue restaurant precinct is still in progress and access to the main carpark has changed due to roadworks. All businesses in the precinct are still open and visitors are most welcome in the area whilst improvements are underway, however please take note of all signage and detours currently in place. The Authority apologises for any inconvenience these works may cause and thank you for your patience. Read more…
