Investigate macro-invertebrates

Explore the biodiversity of a wetland habitat with safe, hands-on investigation of life beneath the water’s surface. Pond dip for macro-invertebrates and use simple identification charts and observation techniques to record findings. Consider the food chains and lifecycles of the animals found and discuss how the wetland might change in the future.

Outcomes

By the end of this program students will:

  • Discuss what wetlands are and why they are important
  • Contribute to discussions about the living and non-living aspects of wetlands, and how they are connected
  • Collect macro-invertebrates using pond-dipping equipment
  • Use a key provided to identify the living things collected
  • Consider classification, life cycles, food chains and adaptations depending on the students year level
  • Older students will collect basis environmental data using scientific techniques
  • Discuss the impacts on wetlands, how the changes in the environment could impact macro invertebrates and food chains, and what actions they can take to help protect wetland areas.
