Event information

For most of the year fungi remain hidden within the soil and dead wood until winter rains prompt them to grow the visible fruiting bodies from which they release their spores. These bodies come in many shapes and sizes from the familiar mushrooms, to round underground earthballs, and the flat, velvety skin fungi that grows on logs. There are fungi in every colour of the rainbow and even some, like the ghost fungus, which glow in the dark.

While pretty to look at, many fungi are highly poisonous. They also have mutually beneficial relationships with our native plants, so fungi are best left in place where they can contribute to the health of the bushland.

Prepare for your walk
