The Western Australian Ecology Centre is located on Perry Lakes Drive, City Beach. Bold Park visitor information is displayed at the building entry.
Officially opened in August 2004, the Western Australian Ecology Centre was initiated as a key strategy in the inaugural Bold Park Environmental Management Plan 2000-2005 to provide a venue to assist community groups, environmental practitioners and educators to undertake their activities, and to provide office space for staff involved in Bold Park's ongoing management.
The Centre is open by appointment only. Please contact the Customer Service Officer for an appointment.
The Centre aims to promote awareness and appreciation of biodiversity conservation in Bold Park and throughout Western Australia.
Design Features
The Centre was designed to harmonise with the surrounding natural landscape and to minimise its environmental and visual impact on the site.
The building features numerous environmental design principals including solar orientation, a flood of natural light, passive ventilation and thermal mass. It also used environmentally sustainable materials for construction such as plantation timber products and raw unfinished cream concrete wall panels to reflect the local limestone that is prevalent in Bold Park.
Artwork
Inspired by scientific research being undertaken in Bold Park, artist Pamela Gaunt created a striking feature on an external wall at the front entry of the Ecology Centre as an interpretation of the important role of the tree canopy in conserving Bold Park's biodiversity.
The artwork represents the patterns formed by an aerial view of the tree canopy as it appeared in the year 2000, floating above a map of Bold Park. The names of 15 native plant species considered to be the most vulnerable in Bold Park are engraved into the 'canopy' pieces, providing a subtle conservation message.
