Eucalyptus drummondii
Drummond’s Gum
An interesting ornamental tree for large gardens that offers plentiful nectar to native fauna.
This multi-stemmed lignotuberous mallee exhibits considerable morphological variation across its range.
It typically develops a bushy dense canopy reaching 3 - 9m in height and produces an abundance of creamy-white flowers in umbels of seven from winter through to summer.
Depending on provenance, this species can present with broad glaucous blue-green foliage or elliptic bright green with yellow stems. The bark flakes to reveal a pale trunk and seasonally pink tones may occur. Fruit persists behind the foliage, adding subtle structure and visual interest.
Grow it at home
- Allocate space for a larger tree that may develop a characteristically crooked trunk
- Plant during late winter to early spring
- Water regularly for the first season and apply a native control-release fertiliser to support establishment
- Mulch to a depth of 50 - 75mm, keeping organic material clear of the stem
- Requires minimal maintenance once established
- Prune any dying or dead branches to encourage new growth
- Allow time for the plant to mature, as habitat development takes time
- An excellent species for attracting native bird and insect life.
