Hakea orthorrhyncha

Bird Hakea

The Bird Hakea acts as a wildlife magnet with its fiery red crimson blooms.

A many-branched lignotuberous shrub 1-3m tall and wide. Flowers displayed May-September in bright red axillary clusters at the leaf nodes along the stems, extensively throughout the shrubs branches- at quick glance it make the plant look almost on fire.

This plant has a broom-like form, dark green foliage and silky grass-like new growth. A very worthy contender for an area that would suit a larger shrub or small tree.

Grow it at home

  • Brilliant and showy in full flower
  • Fruit retained on plant providing a food source for birdlife
  • Favors sandy soils, perfect for Perth's naturally occurring substrate
  • Full sun, allocate an area of the garden where the bed plant has room to grow and spread out
  • Responds well to pruning
  • Loved by nectar-feeding birds
  • Frost tolerant
  • Incredibly ornamental.
