National Science Week is officially launched with a special VIP event at Kings Park and Botanic Garden, celebrating the science, research and conservation helping protect our unique biodiversity.
Hosted by Scitech, the launch brought together leading scientists and conservation experts to showcase the important research and science happening across Australia. Guests also enjoyed a rare behind-the-scenes tour of the Biodiversity Conservation Centre laboratories with the Kings Park Science team, offering a glimpse into the world-class research protecting Western Australia's native flora.
The launch marks the beginning of a series of National Science Week events and experiences at Kings Park, proudly funded by Inspiring WA, inviting visitors to discover the fascinating science behind our plants, landscapes and ecosystems.
Celebrate National Science Week at Kings Park
National Science Week returns from 15 to 23 August 2026, celebrating this year's theme, "Seeds of Science: Nurturing knowledge for all." Join us for a range of exciting events and activities exploring science, conservation and discovery.
15-21 August | 10am-2pm
Follow a self-guided trail through the Western Australian Botanic Garden and uncover how our scientists are helping conserve WA's plant diversity.
Noongar Two-Way Learning Walks
Thursday 20 August | 1:30-2:30pm, 3-4pm
Walk on Country with Noongar educator Rickeeta Walley and explore Indigenous knowledge, plant uses and sustainable land management practices.
Liked to Death: How Social Media is Threatening Australia's Orchids
Friday 4 September | 4-5pm
Join Kings Park Science researchers as they explore the unintended impacts of social media on some of Australia's most vulnerable native orchids and what can be done to help protect them.
Australia's Favourite Wildflower
Kings Park Science is also proud to be collaborating with the ABC Science on its national Australia's Favourite Wildflower project, helping showcase the science, beauty and diversity of Australia's native flora.
As part of the initiative, Kings Park Science experts will contribute to ABC radio interviews and help share stories about Western Australia's remarkable wildflowers, native plant conservation and ecology with audiences across the country.
The project also invites Australians to vote for their favourite wildflower and explore the stories behind some of the nation's most spectacular blooms. The ABC has produced a free National Science Week Wildflower Poster and Colouring-In Pack featuring the wildflower contenders.
Vote for Australia's Favourite Wildflower here. The winner will be announced on Friday 21 August, 2026.
